The Coconut Oil routine

I'd read quite a lot on the benefits of Coconut Oil for Skin, Hair and Health. So I decided that I would test some of them out and give you the low down on what you could expect.

1. Overnight Hair Mask.

If you've been reading my blog for a little while you'll know that I have been going platinum. The hair bleach, although very good and the conditioner I have to say is great, plus the hair mask treatment from L'Oreal and the hair oil from Schwarzkopf both help, I'm still finding that my hair can get very dry. So the first treatment from the lists that I've read is the hair mask.

I'm not sure exactly how much I used as I started out small and kept adding a little at a time until I felt that all my hair was covered from root to tip. I then covered my hair with a disposable shower cap that I had kept from a stay in a hotel, and left it on overnight.

Next Morning I shampooed and conditioned as normal, I didn't have any problems getting the oil to come out, but I was a little disappointed with the result as I didn't find that my hair felt any different. It may take more than one application for it to have an added benefit as my hair is very dry from the bleach.

2. Shaving.

To shave I used about a teaspoon per leg (I only shave from the knee down). I have to say I love the smell of the coconut oil, shaving my legs was dead easy and less messy than with shaving foam. An added benefit you can easily see the hairs and if you've missed any and an added bonus no need to moisturise afterwards as the coconut oil does that while your shaving. I think I have been converted after this little experiment to using Coconut oil for shaving.

3. Makeup Remover

I swiped a cotton round in my jar of coconut oil just to get a little on the round, I then used this all over my face to remove the makeup, I repeated this with another cotton round and rinsed my face with a small amount of a gel cleanser and warm water to get the excess oil off my face ( my skin is oily enough already). I needed a little extra attention on my eyelashes to remove my mascara but this was easily done by using a small amount of the coconut oil on my finger and gently rubbing the lashes and then wiping away with a clean round round.

I have to say this is the easiest way my makeup has come off in a long while.

4. Breath freshener.

I really wanted to give this one a go. So I did a bit of research, as to how best to go about this. I found a few articles here, here and here.

So from several articles I decided I would start with a teaspoon of coconut oil and go from there. Now a couple of articles I read said that the tester had problems with the starting texture of the oil and melted it first in the microwave. but others didn't have a problem, so I tried it from its solid state first. I don't seem to have a problem with the oil in it's solid form, you just kind of chew it first and it turns into a liquid, I then swished it around my mouth for about 10-15 minutes (i'm hopeless at keeping track of time). I have to say that my mouth does feel cleaner after I've done this first, before brushing than just brushing alone.

I'll keep doing this and see if it whitens my teeth as a lot of the articles say that it can.

5. Moisturiser

I get really dry skin and after the shaving test with the coconut oil, I thought I'd give this one a whirl too.

The oil is quite light in texture and doesn't take long before my skin absorbs it. It does't leave my skin greasy and my skin feels lovely and soft and supple.

I will continue to test out the coconut oil for various things and give you an update in a couple of weeks.

Stay fabulous
